Our Mission
The Babel Collective works with people who have experienced displacement to create a community based around reading, writing, discussing and translating literature. Originally conceived as a way of diversifying English language learning for refugees and asylum seekers, it has become a forum dedicated to the promotion of the voices of people who have experienced displacement, through a unique combination of literature classes and an online journal which publishes new writing in a variety of languages.
By combining classes teaching literature in English with a multilingual literary journal, we recognize both the global reach of English and the many other languages in which stories by displaced people can be, and are, told.
Our mission is simple: to create a forum in which people who are often silenced or ignored are given the opportunity to speak and write, and to ensure that those voices are not only heard but amplified.
The Babel Collective was begun in 2021 with the support of a Junior Core Fellowship at the Institute of Advanced Study, Central European University in Budapest.
